There is power in the tongue,
but whose voice
can carry the sun?
There is sway in songs,
but whose words
can make oceans sway along?
There is legislation in politics,
but whose decree
can shape the laws of physics?
There is value in handiwork,
but whose hands
can stretch the universe?
There is revenge in violence,
but whose wrath
can make violence silent?
There is comfort in money,
but whose currency
can remove all suffering?
There is conviction in the law,
but whose decisions
can do no wrong?
There is hope in liberty,
but whose reign
can make all wickedness flee?
There is joy and rest in love,
but whose love
never ends and always was?
There is a drive to survive
and be self-sufficient,
but humility senses
the strength in submission.
I am contingent, imperfect,
and not in control.
I submit to the name
that upholds my soul.
